Akron's own Chrissie Hynde is bringing THE BBC to Akron.
Hynde, currently finishing up an new album recorded in Nashville with fellow Akron native Dan Auerbach, is being filmed by The BBC as they follow her around for a full summer.
Hynde's already been filmed milking a cow and visiting some of her favorite London haunts. Now she's the BBC is following her back home to Akron where she'll spend a few days touring the city with the film crew in tow.
To give her visit someadded gravitas, Hynde has enlisted her longtime friend and professional rock photographer Jill Furmanovsky to bring her traveling exhibit CHUNK of PUNK to the 22 High Street Gallery at Uncorked Wine Bar in downtown Akron.
There will be several events spread across Thursday, July 9 through Wednesday, July 13
Here’s the tentative schedule:
Thursday July 7th-
Jill Furmanovsky Artist Lecture at the Akron Art Museum from 6p.m.-7:30 p.m. free to the public. Coinciding with the opening of Chunk of Punk, her exhibition of photographs, Furmanovsky will lecture in the museum's auditorium. She will be joined by Chrissie Hynde. The exhibit opens at nearby 22 High Street Gallery at Uncorked Wine Bar
Later that evening from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. will be the soft opening of the exhibit featuring Matthew Fenney host "Punk Night" at Annabell's Bar & Lounge & 20 year Akron veteran punk rock musician Larry Gargus,.
Friday July 8th-
Grand opening of Chunk of Punk, veteran rock photog Jill Furmanovsky’s exhibition of photographs from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. Furmanovsky’s Exhibition will run from July 7th through July 30th at 22 High Street Gallery at Uncorked Wine Bar. Featuring live music from local rock duo Time Cat from 7:30 p.m. -10 p.m..Uncorked is located at 30 N. High St.
Sunday July 10th-
Akron art/concert venue Hive Mind will host the band SPACE CAMP!, a queer-punk band from Connecticut. Also performing will be local bands playing Ride or Die and Lu along with experimental California musician SaladSalad. Hive Mind (375 West Exchange St.) is a DIY space and asks for a $5 donation for the bands. This is an all-ages show.
Monday July 11th-
Who Is Poly Styrene? - 7 p.m., free at the Nightlight Theater Limited seating..
Poly Styrene was one of the fierce, unique front persons of 80s English punk. Young, female, mixed race with braces she fronted the shortlived but popular punk band X-Ray Spex which gave the world hits such as “Oh Bondage! Up Yours” from their lone full length punk classic "Germfree Adolescents." Styrene died of breast cancer in 2011. The Nightlight Cinema is located at 30 N. High
Tuesday July 12th-
Akron Punk Night at Annabell’s Lounge,9 p.m.-2 a.m. Annabell’s Akron Punk Night has been going strong on Tuesday nights since 2007. DJs spin classic, local and contemporary punk at the deluxe dive bar. Annabell’s Bar & Lounge is located at 784 W. Market St.
Wednesday July 13th-
-PUNK NIGHT at Musica featuring live music by local punk groups FEDS and Feral Children. Doors at 8:00, show at 9:00. $5.00 cover charge. Musica is located at 51 E. Market St.
