Housekeeping: A Blue Line Beginners team email went out Tuesday morning. If it's not in your  inbox or spam folder, write me at and I'll send it to you by carrier pigeon.

The running season never ends, not even in Northeast Ohio. I was going to use today’s blog to note some local fun runs coming up in May for anyone who wanted to test their training prior to our first Akron Marathon Race Series event on June 24, then I came across a web page that shows Ohio has been hosting dozens of running and walking events every single weekend since New Year’s Day!

You can check out the calendar here:  Just be sure to check off a month and a distance in the filter box or you’ll be scanning a very, very long list.

So today, I’ll just tell you about one. Our BLB teammate Jim Merklin has already signed up for his first race. It’s a 5k called the AkRun & Crawl, a fundraiser for the leadership group Akron Torchbearers, on May 20. Most of us will be six weeks into our training so the timing sounds perfect for 3.5 miles.

And get this — the run is after dark, with runners decked out in neon and glow-in-the-dark accessories. Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights as they pad along the Towpath Trail in Akron’s Merriman Valley.

When the race is over, participants can join a pub crawl through the various drinking holes in the valley, though that is optional. If you sign up by May 10, it’s $20 for the 5k only, or $35 for the run and “crawl” which includes food and drink specials. The price goes up after that.

Find more details at ... And if you decide to sign up, let me know. I can put any attendees on a joint email so you can communicate with each other leading up to the event.

I’ve heard from a couple of other BLBers who have signed up for other runs and walks coming up in the next few weeks. I love the enthusiasm! If you do an event, please take photos and write us a few sentences about your experience for the blog. We want to share in the fun!
