If you are like most people today, you probably have thought about what you are eating and wondered what kind of snack is actually good for you.

Tommy's Jerky, which opened in August of 2011, offers a high protein, low fat snack that is tasty and nutritious at the same time.

"We wanted to sell something different," one of the owners, Mark Haidet, said.

Haidet owns the store with business partners, Mike Stein and Bill Stein. The store's big sellers are jerky and smokies in a variety of flavors.

"The honey barbeque beef jerky is the most popular," Haidet said.

Other flavors include cherry maple, teriyaki beef, Kentucky bourbon and blazing beef. Smokies also come in a variety of flavors.

Tommy's offers free samples of just about everything in the store and encourages customers to try as many as possible. Unique flavors are also offered such as elk, buffalo, venison, gator, salmon and kangaroo. Haidet says that once they introduced the gator and kangaroo flavors, they were sold out.

The store also sells fried peanuts, which are peanuts that are deep fried in the shell with various seasonings, kettle corn, trail bologna and cheese.

Prices vary but the average price for bulk jerky is about $22.50 a pound. A 10 oz. bag runs about $18.99, 7 oz. bag for $14.99 and 4 oz. at $8.99. Turkey and chicken jerky are also available.

Tommy's Jerky is located at 4431 20th Street N.W. in Canton. They can be reached at 330-479-8040.
