Chesapeake Energy Corp. is still No. 1 in Ohio for natural gas drilling permits.
Ohio drillers have received 137 permits for horizontal wells from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
It reports that 35 of those wells have been drilled.
Of the 137 horizontal permits, 100 have gone to Oklahoma-based Chesapeake Energy,
Locally, six horizontal wells are permitted in Stark County: in Osnaburg (two wells), Sandy, Bethlehem, Washington and Marlboro townships.
The Osnaburg well has been drilled and the Bethlehem well is being drilled, ODNR says in its weekly report.
Four horizontal wells have been approved in Portage: in Suffield, Freedom, Rootstown and Palmyra townships.
The wells in Suffield and in Freedom have been drilled, ODNR says.
Medina County has one permitted horizontal well in Harrisville Township.
Carroll County has 49 permits, followed by both Columbiana and Jefferson with 17 and Mahoning with nine.
