New car and light truck sales rose slightly in June from a year ago in a 21-county region of Northeast Ohio.

There were 18,353 new cars and trucks sold last month, up 41 from 18,312 a year ago, according to the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.

In Summit County, there were 1,964 new cars and light trucks sold last month, up 25 from 1,939 a year ago, according to the Akron-based Northeast Ohio Automobile Dealers Association. Since Jan. 1, there have been 10,811 new cars and trucks sold in Summit County. That’s up 86, or 0.8 percent, from 10,725 for the same period in 2011.

Sales of all brands since Jan. 1 are up nearly 3.1 percent to 104,572 from 101,465 for the same period in 2011, according to figures from the 21-county Cleveland dealers’ group.

“While we were basically flat with last June’s numbers, it was still a strong month in terms of sales,” Louis Vitantonio Jr., the Cleveland dealer group’s president, said in a news release. “Obviously, we would like to see stronger sales but any growth is good news. We’re still expecting the local retail automotive industry to grow between 3 and 5 percent this year.”

Ford was the top-selling brand in the Greater Cleveland Auto group’s region even though sales dipped 2.7 percent in June to 3,217 from 3,306 in June 2011. Ford sales are up 4.8 percent since Jan. 1 to 18,638 from 17,784 for the same period last year.

Chevrolet, the No. 2 brand in the region, saw sales fall 9.4 percent in June to 2,551 from 2,816 a year ago. Sales since Jan. 1 are down 9.7 percent to 14,878 from 16,480 for the same period in 2011.

Toyota was June’s third best-selling brand in the region as sales surged 23.3 percent to 1,654 from 1,342 last year. Toyota sales are up 4.9 percent to 8,990 since Jan. 1 from 8,569 for the same period a year ago.

Used vehicle sales in Summit County fell by 209 to 2,722 from 2,931 last year, according to the Akron-based dealer group. Sales of used cars and light trucks since Jan. 1 in Summit County are up 342, or 2.1 percent, to 16,716 from 16,374 for the same period a year ago.

Sales figures are based on state vehicle registration reports from the various counties.
