TALLMADGE: Martin Wheel has received the go-ahead from City Council to enlarge its facility on West Avenue.

The council last week approved the reclassification of the former Tallmadge Beverage property, at 360 West Ave., from commercial to industrial.

That property adjoins Martin Wheel’s manufacturing building. Plans are to level the existing structure on the Tallmadge Beverage site, according to Darrell Ruthrauff, vice president and general manager of Martin Wheel.

About 80,000 square feet will be added to the Martin Wheel building, Ruthrauff said. It primarily will be used for storage. Some of the acquired property will provide additional space for parking.

Martin, a division of Americana Development, manufactures wheels, tires and tubes for a variety of small motorized vehicles, such as lawn mowers and golf carts. It employs approximately 100 people and has been in existence since 1946.

During his State of the City address earlier in the year, Tallmadge Mayor David Kline described the Martin Wheel property as being part of an “economic hot spot” in the city.
