Towpath Credit Union, with two branches in Fairlawn and Akron, has a new leader.

Alan McArthur, a 39-year veteran of the industry who was president and chief executive officer for 14 years, retired, effective Jan. 19.

Rose Bartolomucci, the credit union's president, was named the new CEO by the board of directors.

Last summer, Towpath Credit Union and TeleCommunity Credit Union merged. At the time, McArthur was named CEO with the intention that Bartolomucci would take over as CEO when he retired.

McArthur was the former CEO of First Ohio Community Federal Credit Union before joining what was then Akron Teachers Credit Union in 1998. Under his direction, the credit union obtained a community charter in 2004, which greatly enlarged its field of membership. The name was then changed to Towpath Credit Union in an attempt to reflect a broader community. Following the name change, McArthur oversaw construction of the new branch and headquarters currently located at 2969 Smith Road.

Bartolomucci had been head of TeleCommunity for 22 months and previously was a regulator of credit unions for the state for 2 years and was president and chief executive of the Kent Credit Union for 21 years.

I am honored to have been named President/CEO of Towpath Credit Union, Bartolomucci said in a press release issued on Wednesday. I look forward to helping grow the credit union movement in the communities in which we serve.
