The telephone number to make appointments for free tax preparation under the Akron Summit Earned Income Tax Program is not working because of technical issues.

Coordinators of the nonprofit program say that in the meantime walk-ins are being accepted at Akron Summit Community Action Inc., 670 W. Exchange St.

“We’re available and waiting” for those wanting free tax preparation, program coordinator Gloria McGhee said.

Hours are: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Participants should bring W-2 forms, 1099 forms, unemployment forms, proof of child-care payments, a Social Security card for each dependent, other IRS forms as appropriate, last year’s tax return (if available), bank account and routing numbers for direct deposits (if applicable) and a photo ID.

McGhee said the phone number — 866-861-6401 — might be working by this morning. It has been down since Monday.

Once this phone number is working again, those wanting the service should call to make an appointment, McGhee said.

The program, which provides free services for income-eligible taxpayers, began Jan. 19.

The earned income tax credit (EITC) is for certain people who work and have low wages. A tax credit usually means more money in your pocket. It reduces the amount of tax you owe. The EITC also might give you a refund.

With electronic filing, families can get their full tax refund — as much as $5,721 in additional refunds — in seven days or fewer with direct deposit. Taxes are filed free and on the spot.

Beginning Saturday, the free service will be offered on select Saturdays at a second site: Akron Summit Community Action Inc., 1367 Doty Drive, Springfield Township.

Beginning next week, the service will start on Mondays at the Barberton Park & Recreation Active Adult Division, 500 W. Hopocan Ave.

Beginning Feb. 4, the service will be offered on Saturdays at the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at the University of Akron, 259 S. Broadway.

Appointments for these sites should be made via 866-861-6401.

On Feb. 4, the Akron Summit Earned Income Tax Credit Program will offer Super Refund Saturday, sponsored by KeyBank, at the 670 W. Exchange St. building.

This is a walk-in only event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
