Excuse the Cleveland Browns faithful if they are feeling, well, a bit exhausted, or not quite up to a rousing welcome for Mike Pettine, the new head coach, most recently the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. It wasnít just the lengthy and curious selection process, other teams firing and hiring at a faster clip.

Pettine is the seventh head coach, need we remind, since the Browns returned to the National Football League in 1999. Something akin to the Law of Diminishing Returns must be at work.

Those early selections sparked much enthusiasm. More recently? If the subject was eating ice cream, this feels too early for another bowl, Rob Chudzinski dismissed after just one year at the helm, one year after all those glowing words about his promise, and, more, a kid who grew up with the Browns and knows the tradition.

Perhaps this is just what Browns fans, Mike Pettine and the front office need ó even lower expectations, the pressure eased in certain respects, though Jimmy Haslam, the team owner, does appear taken with the idea that a coach can growl his team into the playoffs.

That isnít to say interest has waned. Browns fans are ready for something much better. They are just feeling weary. They will awaken with the first two-game winning streak!
