The Main Event: Rob Sheffield, 7 p.m. Thursday, Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St. Free, 330-643-9015

Sheffield is a longtime Rolling Stone contributor and author of the popular best-selling book “Love Is A Mix Tape.” Sheffield was also a writer for Spin magazine back when it was cool (yes, it was) and he’s in town to talk about his latest book “On Bowie,” his personal elegy for one of his musical heroes.

Kanye West: The Saint Pablo Tour, 8 p.m. Saturday, Quicken Loans Arena, 1 Center Ct., Cleveland, $29.50-$69, 888-894-9424

This is Yeezy’s first American tour in three years though if you spend any time on the internet it probably seems like he’s been almost everywhere almost all of the time. I saw West many years ago at The Q and as someone who grew up going to hip hop shows consisting mainly of dudes walking back and forth and bear-pawing the mic to yell louder than necessary, West knows how to put on an arena show with videos, orchestra, props etc. Also, you never know just what he’s going to say, reveal, praise or detract and many people find that aspect of West endlessly fascinating.

Royal Bangs, the Beyonderers, Actual Form, 8 p.m. Friday, Thursday’s Lounge, 306 E. Exchange St., $8, www.thursdayslounge.com

Knoxville’s Royal Bangs were on Pat Carney’s now defunct Audio Eagle label and haven’t released a new album in three years, but their previous four albums are packed with eclectic, catchy and tuneful, sometimes spazzy, and varied music. The show is also the CD release party for local Thrash-Surf trio the Beyonderers. R-I-F-F-S!
