Parade. Sure there’s no giant SpongeBob SquarePants balloon weaving its way through the air, dodging lamp posts like in the Macy’s Parade in New York. Akron’s Welcome Santa Holiday Parade has its hometown charm with some 75 units from marching bands to costumed characters to dance groups and, of course, Santa. The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday and makes its way past Akron’s holiday headquarters at Lock 3 Park. Santa will take to the stage set up on Main Street before making his way down into the park.

Peanuts. This is the busy time of the year at Akron’s venerable Peanut Shoppe. Pop in after the parade and grab a box of popcorn or a bag of nuts. There’s also a great selection of dime store candy to chose from. Since you get to choose how much of the yummy stuff you want, it is a great and affordable treat. The kids will enjoy (and likely spend a lot of time) being a grown-up and picking their own special snack. I personally like the off-beat potato chip options the store keeps in stock. The shop is at 203 S. Main St.

Fun playdate. The Akron Art Museum will host one of its Creative Playdates Dec. 3. The theme will be “Snowy Days” and run from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is geared toward children up to age 5 and their grown-up companions. Registration is required at www.akronartmuseum.org/eventregistration or by phone at 330.376.9186. Cost is $10.
