Americans love the companionship of a dog and they love the delicious flavor of a nice cold adult beverage after a hard day of working for The Man.

Americans also love many other adult beverages along with grilled cheese sandwiches and a nice, warm clear sunny day on which to enjoy these simple pleasures of life.

Downtown eatery the Lockview has combined these loves into Yappy Hour.

On Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. dogs and their owners/guardians are welcome to hang out on the restaurant’s now open rooftop patio. Water bowls for thirsty doggies are provided but whether you buy booze for your dog is between you and your dog.

Just as with the main dining room below, Lockview's rooftop patio is a long partially covered rectangle with a well-stocked bar and beer fridge with the basics and many craft favorites, and there is full kitchen service.

The idea came from Kelsey Stallman, Lockview general manager and proud owner of Kimber the golden doodle.

“There's literally nowhere in Akron you can go with your dog and have a drink,” Stallman said matter-of-factly.

Though it was the first edition of Yappy Hour this past week, there was a pretty good crowd with golden doodles with fresh summer cuts mingling with statuesque Dobermans and other friendly mutts.

Likewise, the dog owners and even some folks who just wandered upstairs were enjoying the canine company.

Three friends, Ryan Rohan, Matthew Cicotti and Madison Alda, were enjoying some food and drinks while Rohan wrangled friendly and curious puppies Jasper and Nala, who hoped for some table scraps.

“They're your best friend!” Alda said as to why bringing dogs to a bar is a good idea.

“Yeah, you love them and want to take them everywhere,” Rohan said.

“They can't go that many places. You know people get off work or whatever and they want to hang out with their dogs and it’s nice out and you want to go somewhere and it’s just cool to be able take your dogs and drink and sit outside,” Rohan said.

There are a few rules for Yappy Hour. Leashes are a must, and if you know your dog has issues socializing on leash or with crowds or other dogs in general, than you should probably leave it at home. Also, if your dog is a one of those sad drunks who starts harassing other dogs or plays the same song on the jukebox repeatedly, he or she may not be quite ready for the bar scene. In other words, if your dog is a jerk don't be the jerk who brings his dog and ruins the vibe for everyone else.

For now, Yappy Hour will happen twice a month, including Wednesday, June 1, while the patio is open.

And for folks who don't want to drink with dogs, the Lockview dining room has regular happy hour and a dinner menu with an array of fancy grilled cheese sandwiches with interesting mixes of flavors such as Cheddar, grilled apples and smoked bacon on country butter-top bread and goat cheese, roasted red peppers, spinach and sprouts on Tuscan bread.

Lockview also does sandwiches and basic burgers, including meatless, appetizers and a small selection of salads with most menu items under $10. The beer selection is large and varied and always rotating and includes domestic and Ohio craft breweries alongside more exotic imports and some ciders and fruity beers at decent prices.

The Lockview is at 207 S. Main St. in downtown Akron.
