As I mentioned in a previous post, "China Beach" is finally making its way to DVD, with more than 250 songs licensed. (Music rights long delayed this release on video.) Seventeen songs could not be licensed. And, because it says something about what distributors have to go through with older shows, below is the list of the songs that weren't licensed and what was done in each case. As a rule I am a strict constructionist about this, wanting the music as it originally was; I have seen too many shows harmed by music substitutions on video. ("WKRP in Cincinnati" was one glaring example.) And I am concerned about the Season 2 deletion of part of a scene because it included a recitation of lyrics. But considering how much music the new "China Beach" set managed to include, and that in some of the examples below the substitution was a sound-alike, should the show's fans be content?

The list:

SEASON 1

Episode 186372. Deleted "There'll Be Blue Birds Over the White Cliffs of Dover" over end credits. 1:38.

SEASON 2

Episode 186510.  "Moonlight Becomes You," 2:04.  Replaced Glenn Miller recording with soundalike.

Episode  186501, "Hey Jude," :27.  Section of scene deleted where Dr. Richard recites lyrics of song.

Episode  186504, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," 2:00.  Replaced with "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting…), by Nat King Cole

SEASON 3

Episode 186821, "Did you Ever Have to Make Up your Mind," Lovin Spoonful, 1:20.  Deleted song

Episode 186812, "Pretty as you Feel," by Jefferson Airplane, 2:49. Replaced with "My Girl," Temptations

Episode 186814, "Dance to the Music," by Sly & the Family Stone, 1:33. Replaced with "Dancing in the Streets," by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas

Episode 186804, "Shout," by the Isley Brothers, 2:40. Replaced with version by Dion & the Belmonts

Episode 186814, "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen, 1:00. Replaced by soundalike

Episode 187043, "Summer in the City," Lovin' Spoonful, 3:00. Replaced with soundalike

Episode 187042, "Walking in the Sand," Aerosmith, 1:10. Replaced with version of same song by Shangri-Las. NOTE: The Shangri-Las version of the song is played earlier in the scene; that use is simply extended to replace the Aerosmith recording

Episode 187056, "Try and Love Again," Eagles, 2:00. Replaced with version of same song by Randy Meisner, who WROTE the song when he was IN THE EAGLES.

Episode 186516, "Time has Come Today," Chambers Brothers, :1:30. Replaced with soundalike version

Episode 187045, "Downtown," Petula Clark. Replaced with soundalike version

Episode 187054, "Always on my Mind," Willie Nelson. Replaced with version by BJ Thomas

Episode 187054, "Loving Her was Easier," Willie Nelson.  TWO uses of Willie Nelson recording in episode. One replaced by Roseanne Cash recording; the other replaced by Mark Chesnutt recording.
