Ms. Julie’s Kitchen in Akron, known for its healthful vegan eats, also sells doughnuts — various flavors of the treats, some brightly colored. Owner Julie Costell says the cake-style doughnuts are made with all natural and organic ingredients like all her other sweet treats, such as cookies and pumpkin bread, reports Beacon Journal food writer Katie Byard. Costell also offers some gluten-free varieties. She substitutes applesauce made with local apples for all the oil and half the sugar in the batter. Flavors include coconut bacon maple.
