Have some fun in Portage Lakes area

It’s a busy day of celebrations in the Portage Lakes, including the Boat Parade beginning at 1 p.m. at the old Kieffer Marine location on East Reservoir and ending at Portage Lakes State Park, where the Sandcastle Contest starts at 2 p.m., and the fireworks show will launch at 10 p.m. www.newfranklin.org.

Enjoy Ukrainian food, music at festival

The Ukrainian Festival runs from 1 to 8 p.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, featuring homemade pierogi, stuffed cabbage rolls and lots of baked goods, as well as dancing, a polka band and more. Listen to orchestra concert in Tallmadge

Watch fireworks at Kent Heritage Festival

The Kent Heritage Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Kramer Ball Fields, with fireworks at 10 p.m. It will offer a variety of festival/fair foods, live music and entertainment on three stages. Dress up as princess or pirate at zoo

The Akron Zoo is hosting a Princess and Pirate Day. Dress up and participate in a treasure hunt and themed bingo. From 1 to 3 p.m., guests can meet a “real” princess and pirate.
