Q.: We are in a dilemma regarding the various yogurts sold in the markets. You can buy yogurt for 50 to 55 cents or $1.29 per container. The taste is somewhat different. However, we wonder if the more expensive yogurt is worth more than double merely because it is Greek.

A.: Greek yogurt is subjected to a straining process that removes nearly all of its whey, which is what makes it so much thicker and creamier than regular yogurt.

Plain Greek yogurt typically has nearly twice the protein of regular yogurt and less sugar, as well as a tangy flavor that many consumers appreciate. However, Greek yogurt can have a lot more fat, depending on the brand and variety you buy. If buying Greek yogurt, it is best to stick with low-fat varieties. When it comes to fruited varieties, sugar amounts will vary widely.

It requires more milk to produce Greek yogurt, which helps to explain its higher cost. Whether it is worth the cost to you depends on how much you want to spend on your yogurt, whether you desire a thicker, creamier, more high-protein product and whether you are willing to spend more to get it.
