Headtrip Brewery — a new nanobrewery in Stow — let drinkers into its tasting room last weekend for a soft opening.

“This is great,” co-founder and brewer Nick Seagle said as he surveyed the crowded brewery on Friday afternoon. “This is what we’ve been working toward.”

Headtrip is in a skinny storefront in the Stow-Hudson Towne Centre shopping plaza, 1634 Norton Road.

There’s a small bar, plenty of tables and a real dart board, as opposed to an arcade one. The three-barrel brewing system is in the back.

An interesting fact about the bar is that it features a railing that was reclaimed from the former George J. Renner Brewing Co. building on Forge Street in Akron.

Headtrip co-founder Tom Mitchell works in the building and found the railing. Renner stopped producing beer in Akron in the early 1950s.

Headtrip debuted its tasting room with four beers:

• Arndale Ale, a mild ale.

• Manneken Pis, a Belgian-style golden strong ale.

• Bike & Hike, a Belgian-style rye IPA.

• Thank Evans, a chocolate, peanut butter, oatmeal, coffee stout.

The rye IPA and stout were the fan favorites, Seagle said.

Headtrip plans to have another soft opening this weekend, when a mosaic IPA should be available. Keep an eye on the brewery’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HeadtripBrewery) for specific hours.

A grand opening will likely take place sometime in late December, Seagle said.

Headtrip is part of a new wave of breweries opening in the Akron area, including Hop Tree in Hudson, Ignite in Barberton, Missing Mountain in Cuyahoga Falls, and Missing Falls and Akronym in Akron.
