You know we are knee-deep into fall when St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Suffield Township hosts its annual Something Russian Festival. This year’s festival is 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Oct. 3.
The abundance of Russian and ethnic food includes pierogi, paczki, chicken Kiev, stuffed cabbage, blini, borscht, potato pancakes and grilled cevapcici, a Russian sausage of beef and pork made by church members. There also will be a wide variety of baked goods, including nut, poppy seed and apricot rolls and kiffle, and a full Russian tea room.
They’ll have Russian music and dancing, tours of the church, and Russian gift items for sale, including nesting dolls and Ukrainian Easter eggs.

Food and wine for hospice
Joyful Tastes of Life, a wine and food-tasting event to benefit Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, will be 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11 at Todaro’s Party Center, 1820 Akron-Peninsula Road, Cuyahoga Falls.
The event is hosted by the Akron General Foundation, and will feature wines from around the world and food from area restaurants: Aladdin’s Eatery, Bravo!, Bruegger’s Bagels, Casa del Ranchero, China Gourmet, Cilantro Thai & Sushi, D’Agnese’s Trattoria and Café, DeVitis Italian Market, Ivan’s Diner, Sweet Pea Café, Tiffany’s Bakery, Trivs Restaurant & Lounge, and West Side Bakery.
Providing beverages will be Europa Import/Export Ltd., Firelands Winery, Glazer’s Distributors of Ohio, Heidelberg Distributing Co., Purple Feet Wines, Southern Wine & Spirits of Ohio and the Superior Beverage Group.
There also will be music, a silent auction and raffle for a $1,500 vacation package to Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia.

Hudson Library food events
Hudson Library & Historical Society is hosting speakers and demonstrations about food in October.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, chef Mairann Offtermatt will demonstrate gluten-free cooking, with muffins on the menu.
Offtermatt owns and operates NourishMe, a gluten-free personal chef service. There is a $5 materials fee. Register in person at the library’s second-floor reference desk, 96 Library St., Hudson. No phone registrations will be accepted. Space is limited.
At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr. will discuss his book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure, and explain how a vegan lifestyle can create a healthy heart. Esselstyn is director of the cardiovascular prevention and reversal program at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute.
Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing. Refreshments will be served. The program is free, but tickets are required; visit the second-floor reference desk or Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N. Main St., Hudson.
At 7 p.m. Oct. 17, chef Susan Townsend will give a presentation about vegan recipes. There is a $5 fee payable at the time of advance registration at the second-floor reference desk.

Annual clambake at Gus’
Gus’ Chalet Restaurant & Lounge, 938 E. Tallmadge Ave., is hosting its 39th annual clambake now through Saturday.
The menu includes two dozen clams in broth, clam chowder, salad, baked half chicken, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob and dessert for $37. Add a strip steak, filet or lobster to the menu for $69.50. Extra clams are $10.95 a dozen.

Does your kitchen need a lift? The Peninsula Art Academy, 1600 W. Mill St., Peninsula, is hosting an Art in the Kitchen exhibit Oct. 6 to Nov. 17, with a reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9.
Art for the kitchen will be on display, and the artists will talk about what inspired their work. Members of the Ohio State Chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association also will be on hand. Refreshments will be served.

The Ohio State University Extension and Medina Community Services Center are sponsoring a nutrition class with thrifty cooking tips, titled Desserts Can Fit at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 9.
The class, which will provide healthful, low-calorie, nutritious dessert ideas, is free at the Community Services Center, 655 N. Broadway St., Medina. Registration is not required.
