Derby for Dollars

Catholic Charities of Summit County held its Derby for Dollars event May 18 at Portage Country Club in Akron.

The night featured Father Leo Patalinghug of fatherleofeeds.com, a priest and professional chef who travels the world, cooking and preaching about the importance of families cooking and dining together. His bourbon sauce was a fiery hit.

Sister Ana Gonzalez spoke about the work of Catholic Charities and helping those in need. The Dominican Sister of Peace works for Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.

Master of Ceremonies was Drew Horansky from WKYC (Channel 3). A dinner party for 10 with Diocese of Cleveland Bishop Nelson Perez was auctioned.

Proceeds benefited the Basic Needs programs at Blessed Trinity Parish, Visitation of Mary Parish and Barberton Area Community Ministries, which include emergency rent and utility assistance, community hot meals and the food pantry.

Sons of Italy

The Sons of Italy, Akron Lodge 685 held its initiation/scholarship dinner on May 2 at The Venue in Tallmadge. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee that reviews GPA, recommendations, accomplishments and activities, and essays on their career choice and their Italian heritage.

Zachary Conti, son of John and Andrea Conti, was awarded a scholarship in memory of past president Norm Ross. Zachary is graduating from Ohio State University and will attend graduate school at American University majoring in public policy and administration.

Kimberly Kramer, daughter of Nicole Smith, will be graduating from Green High School and attend Ohio Northern University majoring in pre-veterinary. Her scholarship is funded by a donation from Guido and Rose Margida and Peter and Diane Kalgreen in memory of Henry and Civita Noethen.

Eleven new members were inducted.
