Volunteer Center staff

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Akron Civic Theatre: Volunteers needed 12:30-4 p.m. and/or 5:30-10:30 p.m. during show times to take and count tickets, usher customers, work as box office escorts provide will-call assistance. Minimum age: 16.

Akron International Friendship: Volunteers needed on a flexible basis to welcome international students, scholars, teachers and/or visiting leaders for an evening of dinner hospitality and/or short-term overnight stays. Minimum age: 21.

Akron Public Schools: Volunteers needed on a regular basis to assist with tutoring and mentoring students as well as helping students in the classroom. Minimum age: 18.

American Red Cross of Summit & Medina Counties: Volunteer needed from June through August to assist with water safety program. Volunteers should be swimming enthusiasts and enjoy working with children. Must be able to commit to two sessions per week. Minimum age: 18; 16 with adult supervision.

AseraCare Hospice: Volunteers needed to spend time with patients, provide respite, office/clerical, bereavement, etc. Minimum age: 18: 14 with adult supervision.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Volunteers needed 2-7 p.m. Monday-Friday to assist club members with homework and provide companionship. A one-hour orientation is provided. Minimum age: 16; 14 with adult supervision.

Catholic Charities Community Services/Summit County: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to help older individuals with games, crafts and exercises. Minimum age: 16.

Christian Fellowship Basketball League: Volunteers experienced in grant writing needed to research and write grants. Minimum age: 21.

Church on the Hill: Volunteers needed noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays to assist with general building maintenance (inside/outside), painting, set-up/take-down for events, etc. Minimum age: 16; 12 with adult supervision.

First Tee of Akron: Volunteers needed 2:30-5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays for a minimum of one day a week for eight weeks (September-October and/or April-May) to assist with SNAG, a golf program for children in grades 1-5. Minimum age: 18.

Greater East Ohio Area Alzheimer’s Association: Volunteers needed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays, a minimum of three to four hours every two weeks, to call caregiver support group members to remind them of upcoming meetings. Minimum age: 18.

Info Line Inc.: Volunteers needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for a minimum of two to five hours a week on a flexible basis to clean and test Lifeline equipment. Minimum age: 18.

International Institute of Akron: Volunteer English instructors needed six hours a week for at least 15 weeks 9-11 a.m. or 5:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays evenings to work with students in a group setting. Minimum age: 18.

Paws and Prayers: Volunteers needed three to five hours Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11 a.m. to help find homes for dogs during adoption events. Minimum age: 18; 16 with adult supervision.

Pregnancy Care of Summit County: Volunteers wanted weekdays to assist staff in interviewing clients, teaching classes, doing office/clerical, speaking engagements, etc. Minimum age: 18.

Project: LEARN of Summit County: Volunteers needed to tutor adults three hours per week. Training (nine hours) every other month. Workshop fee is $25. Length of commitment is one year. Minimum age: 18.

Senior Independence Hospice: Volunteers needed for “Make It Happen” program to help record/document patient’s life stories by video/audio means, scrapbooks, and/or by participating in a birthday or special occasion with the patient and clinical team. Minimum age: 18.

Summa Health System: Volunteers needed weekdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to assist by greeting visitors and staff members at the Nursing Education Center. Minimum age: 18.

Summa’s Palliative Care & Hospice Services: Volunteers needed to use their sewing skills to create KeepSake Pillows for bereaved families who have lost a loved one. Minimum age: 16.

YMCA Voris Community Learning Center: Volunteer leaders, instructors and assistants needed 6-8 p.m. weekdays for a variety of programs. Minimum age: 18; 16 with adult supervision.
