Two Akron girls, ages 13 and 14, found themselves on Santa’s naughty list last week when they were charged with shoplifting.

The girls told Springfield Township police that they filled a shopping cart full of gifts for each other so the mother of one wouldn’t have to spend that much money on them.

Authorities say the pair was being monitored by loss prevention personnel at the Walmart on South Arlington Road on Dec. 21 when they pushed the cart outside without paying.

A Walmart employee told police that the teens said the mother of the younger suspect passed by as they were being led back into the store.

According to police, an officer called the mother who denied being at Walmart with the girls and refused to come pick up her daughter, who had to be released into the custody of another relative.

The case has been referred to Summit County Juvenile Court. The mother of one of the girls, who authorities say drove them to Walmart, has also been charged with obstructing official business and endangering children.
