An Akron man shot by police during a standoff last month has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of his former girlfriend.

Ashley Michelle Williams, 27, was last seen about 9:45 p.m. Sept. 22 when she was dropping off her children at a friend’s house before she went to meet her ex-boyfriend Marcus Coker, 35.

Williams’ family reported her missing about 7 p.m. Sept. 23 and a half-hour later, a Cuyahoga Falls man returned home to find a strange woman — who turned out to be Williams — dead in his apartment.

Akron police tried to stop Coker about 11:20 p.m. Sept. 22 for driving erratically in Goodyear Heights.

Police said Coker initially refused to stop, but did after hitting a parked car.

Coker then refused to exit his vehicle, police said, beginning a standoff in which an Akron police officer fired a shot into the car that hit Coker in the head, wounding him.

Coker, who was expected to survive, also faces unrelated charges of breaking into the home of another former girlfriend Sept. 20 and beating her up.

Last week, the officer who shot Coker was on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

The Beacon Journal/Ohio.com has requested a copy of new police body camera footage that captured video and/or audio of the incident.
