The Akron Police Department has lost of one of its K-9 officers.
Shane, who recently was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, died Monday, the department said in a news release. The 5-year-old German shepherd joined the department in December 2008.
Working alongside her handler, Officer Darren McConnell, Shane was credited with 246 arrests, 127 of them felonies. She helped nab 14 robbers and 59 burglars and was involved in 82 drug-related arrests.
Only one person tried to flee from Shane, the department said, and that robbery suspect was caught after a chase that covered less than 30 yards.
Shane recently placed second in the “Top Dog” K-9 competition held at downtown Akron’s Lock 3 Park. She also performed in numerous K-9 demonstrations for the public.
McConnell and the department acknowledged the donation from Copley Feed & Supply that made the acquisition of Shane possible.
