An education assistant at Hyre Middle School has been arrested on charges of raping two children.
D’Juan Shields, 40, was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail on Tuesday. He is charged by Akron police with two counts of rape of a child under 13 and three counts of gross sexual imposition.
Police spokesman Lt. Rick Edwards said the accusers are not students at Hyre.
The girls, who were 10 and 7 at the time of the alleged offenses, are the children of an acquaintance of Shields, Edwards said.
The offenses occurred, according to police, from December to April inside a Niagara Avenue home in Akron. The allegations were recently reported to police, Edwards said.
An attorney for Shields could not be immediately identified.
Akron Public Schools officials said Tuesday that Shields has been suspended from his position as an education assistant pending the outcome of the criminal case. He has worked for the district since 2006.
Shields faces a life sentence in prison, if convicted of the rape charges. Shields is scheduled to appear today in Akron Municipal Court for an initial hearing.
