Akron plans to redesign the traffic flow on portions of Wilbeth Road and East Exchange Street as part of an upcoming Safe Routes to Schools project.

The four-lane roads will be re-striped for three vehicle lanes — with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane. The roads also will feature dedicated bicycle lanes and parking lanes where possible.

The project will affect Wilbeth from Interstate 77 to South Arlington Street, and East Exchange from South Arlington to Fountain Street.

“These changes will provide safer, calmer traffic flow for vehicles by creating a ‘right sized’ roadway, which will also allow better options for cyclists and pedestrians,” the city said in a statement.

The estimated $400,000 construction project is scheduled to begin in the summer.
