Construction crews are digging this week at a wall near Lock 3 to assess the extent of repairs needed along the Ohio & Erie canal.
A 90-foot section of an 18-foot high concrete wall from the post-World War II era was damaged after a torrential rainstorm in July.
The wall is near Lock 3 Park approaching the Civic Theatre in downtown Akron.
The city obtained a state grant this year that will cover about $262,000 of the cost to replace the wall.
Jim Weber, the city’s construction division manager, said workers are trying to determine what repairs are needed. He said the cost has yet to be determined.
“We’ve got to do something,” he said from the work site on Thursday. “Right now, we’re cleaning up the canal, evaluating the situation and trying to determine what we need to do.”
