BARBERTON: Lake Cinemas Theater could reopen April 19, pending confirmation from Sony and AT&T, said Dave Vaughan, executive director of Neighborhood Development Services.

The downtown staple was anticipated to open as early as Monday, but that will be delayed about three weeks because of technical problems.

“The Sony equipment came in late, and there have been technical issues between AT&T and the Sony equipment,” Vaughan said Friday.

Each projector requires Internet access to work, and there have been problems with the connectivity of projector lines.

NDS spent about $250,000 to install the digital equipment from Sony, and for two 3-D screens and to renovate the entryway.

The City Council recently set aside $48,000 for external maintenance on the building during its budget approval process.

NDS purchased the theater in February with a $545,000 loan from the Barberton Community Development Corp., after negotiations between the city and the previous tenant, Phil Canfora, fell apart late last year. The theater temporarily closed Jan. 15 as a result.

The group finalized an agreement with Great Oak Cinemas of Wadsworth to operate the theater once it opens.
