The Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron has received a gift of $2.8 million from the estate of Howard Haberkost that will help future generations of political scientists.

It is the largest gift in the history of the institute.

Interest from the donation will provide about $135,000 a year to defray the cost of internships for about 30 students studying party politics, campaign management and lobbying outside of the area.

Haberkost, who died in August, graduated from West High School in Akron and Purdue University. He was a retired accountant for Roadway Express in Richfield.
