DAYTON: Authorities say a fiery, multivehicle crash that killed two truckers and lit up a southwest Ohio highway should spur extra caution by drivers in construction zones during the long Labor Day weekend.

The Dayton Daily News reports Ohio logged only five fatal crashes in construction zones before the collisions late Wednesday on Interstate 75 near Tipp City. Ohio had 16 deadly construction zone crashes in 2012.

Troopers said the Wednesday wreck began near such a zone when a tractor-trailer failed to stop for traffic and hit another car and a big rig, setting off a chain of collisions.

Sgt. Joe Gebhart of the State Highway Patrol’s post in Piqua says troopers try to make themselves visible near construction zones to help slow down drivers before they reach trouble spots.
