The Rev. Ronald Fowler received the Presidentís Community Service Award from the Akron Urban League. He is a senior pastor at Akronís Arlington Church of God, a board member and board president of Akron Public Schools and an adviser to universities and foundations. He helped the Urban League raise money to pay off its mortgage.

Education

Nicole Spears of Medina, a junior at Ohio University, received the Student of the Year Award from the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The $2,000 award recognizes an exceptional student who is majoring in public relations or communications. She will graduate next spring with a bachelorís degree in strategic communications.

The North Canton Alumni Association has selected alumni and community members and one organization to induct into its Hall of Distinction. Edward Beck Jr., a 1968 Hoover High grad who went missing as a Marine at Denang Harbor, Vietnam, in 1969 and is presumed dead; Myron Draper, a 1959 graduate of Hoover High and a retired financial adviser at Merrill-Lynch; Sister Susanne Gill, who graduated from North Canton High in 1948 and was a religious educator for decades; and the Lions Club of North Canton.

Triway High graduate Destiny Roberts of Wooster received a scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association of Alexandria, Va.

Greta Minor of Wadsworth received a $2,000 scholarship from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She graduated from Highland High and is the daughter of Cheryl and Barry Minor. She is majoring in neuroscience at the College of Wooster. Her choice of study was influenced by her motherís diagnosis of MS in 2003.

Bailey Willis received the first $2,500 scholarship from Servpro of South and East Stark County. Willis, daughter of Lisa Willis of Alliance, is a sophomore studying nursing at the University of Akron.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich named Elizabeth Carter of Hudson as a student member of the Northeast Ohio Medical University trustees. She is a third-year pharmacy major with a bachelorís degree in Italian from Ohio State. She will serve two years.

Cloverleaf High School senior Brian Easterling won the individual history competition and junior Ashley Meece was a finalist in the literature competition at the ACE Quiz Bowl Camp. They are members of the high schoolís Academic Challenge team.

Project GRAD has selected six individuals and one company to be honored at its seventh annual Achieving Dreams Celebration. Honorees will be Bob Kulinski, president of the United Way of Summit County, and Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, as the community service honorees. The 2013 Buchtel alumni honorees are the late Barbara Dirden Mathews, who received the Memorial Award; Shayla L. Brown, the Young Alumni Award; Leon Harris and Dr. Pamela Hamilton-Stubbs, Distinguished Service to Humanity Awards; and Ohio State Sen. Tom Sawyer, Lifetime Achievement Award.

Grant Buchanan of Hudson received a $9,000 scholarship from PSS World Medical. Grantís father, Tim, and stepmother, Jayne, both are employed at PSS World Medical. Grant is a sophomore at Ohio University.

The Hudson Alumni Association has selected 16 inductees who have distinguished themselves in the military, science and engineering and other fields for this yearís Hall of Fame. Inductees are: Richard E. Breedon of David, Cal., Class of 1973; the late Welden Case of Boca Raton, Fla., 1938; Beth Creighton of Lovettsville, Va., 1987; the late Jerry Lindh of Medina, 1981; Martha Litzell Marsh of Hudson, 1947; Ada Cooper Miller of Hudson, 1924, Fran Murphey of Boston Heights, 1940; the late Joseph Rosato of Hudson, 1950; the late Lila Sheetz Wagner of Hudson, 1933; the late Arthur Stokes of Hudson, 1936; the late Ronald Davidson of San Diego, 1961; the late Howard Haskins of Hudson, 1943; the late Dante Lavelli of Westlake, 1941; the late Scott Lee, 1978; the late Paula Lerner of Cambridge, Mass., 1977; and Gerald Reeves of Akron, who was superintendent of Hudson Schools from 1973-1981.

Military

Army Pfc. Teran R. Chapman graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Terri Chapman of Akron and Mark Chapman of Canton. She is a 2010 graduate of Mogadore High School.
