Akron native Paula Cunningham of Lansing was among six contemporary women to be inducted into the Michigan Womenís Hall of Fame. She was the first female president of Lansing Community College, the first female African-American to chair the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce and the first female president and CEO of Capitol National Bank.


Four students at the Ohio Conservatory of Ballet in Akron received scholarships to attend training programs this summer: Kelsey Stinson of Akron, to the American Ballet Theater and Joffrey Ballet; Gwendolyn Brunot of Akron, to the American Ballet Theater and Bolshoi Ballet; and Edward Brunot of Akron and Paige Baker of Canal Fulton, to the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater.

Coventry resident Sarah M. Harper received the 2013 Presidential Award from the Ohio Educational Library Media Association. Harper is an associate professor of library and information science at Kent State.

Susan Day of Canton is one of 71 students nationwide to receive a Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan through the United States-?Japan Bridging Foundation. Day is a student at the University of Findlay who begins her yearlong studies near Hiroshima next month. She is the daughter of Kumi and Charles Day.

Melody Smith, daughter of Dan and Melissa Smith of Suffield, received the Suffield Lions Clubís annual scholarship. She is studying music at Ohio Wesleyan.


Daniel J. Pastoria, a 2011 graduate of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy and was accepted into the Corps of Cadets. He is the son of Rick and Beth Pastoria of Stow, and expects to graduate from West Point in 2017.

Gregory P. Murray of Gainesville, Va., is retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He is deputy director of intelligence integration for the Navy in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, graduated from the University of Akron and received a masterís degree from the Naval War College. His mother, Flo, and stepfather, Charles Hall, live in Akron; his father, Roger, and stepmother, Shirley, live in North Canton.

Army Pfc. Bobbi J. Brown, a 2011 graduate of Akronís Garfield High, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Army Pvt. Mathew D. Neal, son of Ruth Ilg and stepson of Jeffery Ilg of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2008 graduate of Ellet High School, Akron.

Army Pvt. Wesley L. Johnson has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Vince Johnson of North Canton and Candy Johnson of Wadsworth. He is a 2012 graduate of Green High School.
