Cuyahoga Falls press release
On Feb. 25. shortly after 9 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Economy Inn reference a suicidal male. The report from the subject’s wife indicated that he was in possession of a weapon, a .40 caliber handgun.
Officers made contact with the individual by phone, but he would not come out of the room or open the door for officers. After approximately 2½ hours standoff, officer convinced Joseph J. Zigler, 28 years of age, to open the door and surrender the handgun.
Zigler was taken by officers to Support for an evaluation. The handgun was taken for safekeeping and placed into property of the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department. When the gun was turned over to police officers, it was secured in a gun case with a lock attached to the gun and was never a threat to any officer. Zigler, a veteran of the Iraq war, was upset over a domestic relationship and did speak with a VA counselor on the phone prior to surrendering to officers.
