CLEVELAND: On New Year’s Eve, Cleveland native Drew Carey and thousands of revelers are expected to join a celebration on Public Square designed to become a new tradition downtown.

An organization of civic leaders, including the Cleveland New Year’s Eve Alliance and the young professionals group Ohio Homecoming have planned the event, called “Cleveland Rocks New Year’s Eve 2013 — Electric Ice!”

In addition to Carey and other celebrities, the electronic dance-music band Krewella will headline Tuesday night. The free festival also will include ice sculpting, fireworks and performances from a variety of acts.

“Cleveland is home, and I can’t imagine a better place to spend the New Year,” Carey said. “When I heard what the Ohio Homecoming group was planning, and that they wanted me to be part of it, my response was, ‘Hell, yeah!’ So I’m happy to layer up and party on Public Square with my fellow Clevelanders.”

Carey will deliver the countdown into 2014 live on Channel 19 (WOIO) from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

“Landing Drew Carey to be part of Cleveland Rocks New Year’s Eve is a major win for us,” Ohio Homecoming Managing Partner Alonzo Mitchell said. “We’ve always wanted to work with Drew because of what he’s done to shine a light on Cleveland with his success in entertainment, so this is the perfect collaboration for what we’re trying to do with this celebration.”

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday on Public Square.

“We think there isn’t any reason why we can’t have a New Year’s celebration that is on par with other big cities like New York,” said John Gadd, president of Hotcards, one of the event’s sponsors. “We’ve got a deep pool of committed young professionals who know how to make things happen —with a lot of support from the city and county and local businesses.”

So why this year?

“New Year’s falls on a Wednesday, and people have to work around it. So it’s a great year to stay in town and not have to travel,” Gadd said. “You’re going to get the big-city New Year’s Eve experience right in your backyard.”
