AKRON: An Akron man was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison after a Summit County jury convicted him for his role in the armed robbery of a hospital employee in an Akron General Medical Center parking lot.

Rayonte L. Jones, who turns 25 today, was given five years for the aggravated robbery conviction, plus an additional three years for using a gun in the crime.

The jury also found him guilty of receiving stolen property and misuse of a credit card. He was acquitted of two counts of robbery.

On Jan. 3, police said the victim, a 61-year-old man, was robbed at gunpoint of his wallet, credit cards and cash. Jones was the driver of the getaway car.

Co-defendent William Weems, 20, of West Thornton Street in Akron, was previously sentenced to eight years in prison for the holdup.

Common Pleas Judge Amy Corrigall Jones handled both cases.
