AKRON: A former Akron Public Schools teaching assistant pleaded guilty Wednesday in the middle of his Summit County rape trial and was sentenced immediately to life in prison with parole eligibility after serving 10 years, authorities said.

D’Juan Shabazz Shields, 40, of the 1000 block of Jean Street in Akron, pleaded guilty to raping a child under the age of 13 and four counts of gross sexual imposition.

He also was classified as a Tier III sex offender, the most serious category under Ohio law. It requires lifetime registration with address verification at the county sheriff’s office every 90 days.

Prosecutors said Shields, who was a teacher’s assistant at Hyre Middle School, sexually assaulted two young girls in 2011 and 2012.

Neither victim was a student at the school, prosecutors said.

The Summit County trial was handled by visiting Judge Robert Brown, formerly a Common Pleas judge in Stark County.
