Two women and a 7-year-old girl were shot inside a car Friday afternoon on Hamlin Street in West Akron, police said.

The women — ages 19 and 22 — and the girl were taken to separate hospitals. Two were expected to survive. Police said one was in serious condition, but did not identify which.

This was the second time in seven days that an Akron girl had been shot inside a car in West Akron.

A week ago, 4-year-old Janaya Swain was fatally shot while she sat in a car with three other children and the grandmother of two of the children. They were waiting for Janaya’s, mother who had parked the car on Mercer Avenue while she went to a house to retrieve something that belonged to her.

When nobody answered the door, Janaya’s mother smashed the windows on the porch, police said, and a man inside came out with a rifle and fired a shot that killed Janaya. Darnell L. Bitting faces a murder charge and other counts in the case, which unfolded about a mile away from Friday evening’s triple shooting.

It is not yet clear what prompted the latest shooting or whether the women and girl were targeted.

About 4:45 p.m., someone in a passing vehicle fired the shots that wounded the women and girl, police said. No description of the vehicle or shooter was provided.
