“Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit because there are footprints on the moon.”

The quote is one of nearly two dozen Northfield Center Girl Scout Megan Garvey painted on the girls’ restroom walls at Nordonia Middle School and in high-visibility spots throughout Lee Eaton Elementary School as part of her Painting Positivity Gold Award project.

Garvey, 18, joined Girl Scout Troop 90510 as a first-grader at Sagamore Hills’ Rushwood Elementary School and has continued as a Scout for the past 12 years.

For this year’s Catholic Schools Week, students at St. Sebastian Parish School in Akron collected personal hygiene items, household cleaning products, socks, mittens and other items for Isabella’s Closet, an organization that serves Summit County adults with severe mental illness.

Malaya Owens, from the LeBron Club at Kenmore-Garfield High School, was named Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club of the Western Reserve. Abrianna Johnson from the Eller Club at Archbishop Hoban High School was runner-up, and Karla Rickards from the Eller Club at Akron Early College received the participation award.

Earlier this month, the Summit County Executive’s Office awarded a $51,000 grant to the Summit County Historical Society. The grant money will be used to continue historical preservation as well as for educational and community events.

“The Summit County Historical Society is a valuable resource that works to preserve the historical record of our community,” County Executive Ilene Shapiro said. “The grant will assist not only with that vital preservation, but also in providing Summit residents with opportunities to learn about our past.”

Fifth-grader Donald Johnson took first place in the St. Mary School spelling bee. The runner-up was seventh-grader Amarione Brown. Kalira Pryer was the winner of the school’s geography bee, with Jaicee Wallace coming in second place.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) recognized Ray Evans, vice president of environmental and technologies at FirstEnergy, with an award for his “exceptional leadership and service to the EPRI Environment and Energy Sector through expert advice, collaboration and insight.”
