Buchtel Community Learning Center middle school students participated in the annual Ohio Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Leadership conference, where they won awards for their community projects.

The eighth-grade chapter finished fourth in the state for their Plastic Comfort project. Students implemented a plastic bag recycle campaign at Buchtel and used the bags to crochet mats for the homeless. The mats were given to Haven of Rest this month.

The seventh-grade chapter received a First Time New Chapter award and won a silver medal for their project, buchtel@yourservice.1040, which involved Buchtel students writing thank you letters and sending care packages to deployed troops.

The students were led by their teacher-adviser Teddy Nantambi Mwonyonyi, a family and consumer sciences instructor.

Dr. Tia Bianca Nelson, the daughter of Michael and Tina Nelson of Akron and granddaughter of Magnolia Davis of Akron, received her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree June 2 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). She received a bachelor of science degree in biology from Norfolk State University in 2008 and a master of science degree in biomedical sciences with a concentration in forensic medicine from PCOM in 2012. She is continuing her medical training in family medicine at Suburban Community Hospital in East Norriton, Pa.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio honored 43 Gold Award recipients at a celebration this month at the John S. Knight Center in Akron. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest a Girl Scout senior or ambassador can earn.
