GREEN: Meeting in emergency session Thursday afternoon, the Board of Education hired a successor to Daryl Witmer, director of student services, who retired in March after 30 years with the district.

Alana Niemiec, a Lake Township resident with seven years’ experience in student services, will become Green’s director of student services Aug. 1 with a two-year contract and annual salary of $82,597.

She spent one year in the Aurora City Schools and the last six years at West Branch Schools, including the last two as the department’s director. She has a bachelor’s degree from Edinboro University and a master’s and education specialist degree from Kent State University.

Before being hired for the full-time position, board members hired her as interim director from July 1 to 31 at a per-diem rate of $317.68 as needed, Treasurer/CFO Eydie Snowberger said.

Afterward, Niemiec said, “I am very impressed with the central office administration and the structures they have in place to work together and collaborate for student improvement and special services.

“I am also impressed with how high-achieving the district is and the community appeal here. I feel this will be a really strong fit for me.”

Superintendent Jeffrey Miller commented, “Alana was a strong candidate, and we are looking forward to working with her... “I feel confident we will continue doing the things [at which] we are already successful.”

Concerning Niemiec’s predecessor, Miller said, “Daryl served the district for a long time and was an excellent director. It is very difficult to replace him. He was critical to the district, and we feel Alana will step in and continue the things Daryl did and come with some fresh ideas.”

Initial duties for the new director will include overseeing instruction and assessment for special education, Title I, the developmental preschool and English language learners.
