Betty O’Neill-Roderick

Hugman spent Monday afternoon sightseeing in downtown Akron.

A 15-inch-tall LEGO figure, Hugman visited Lock 3 Park and areas along the Towpath Trail of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Hugman is the creation of New York artist Nathan Sawaya, who creates his works of art using LEGO bricks.

Linda Chevalier, volunteer administrator at the Mansfield ARTS Center, where an exhibition of Sawaya’s LEGO art is currently on display, accompanied Hugman to Akron.

Sawaya, 40, calls Hugman — his outstretched arms hug sign posts, park benches and even bicycles — his latest form of street art. He has no official connection with LEGO, however; he buys his bricks the same as all LEGO fans. He just buys a lot more of them as he accepts commissions to create his unique form of art.

The Art of the Brick will be on view at the Mansfield ARTS Center, 700 Marion Ave., Mansfield, until Nov. 16. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
