Note to thieves: 2018 Cadillac XT5s come with a digital co-pilot.

Akron police say that’s how an SUV stolen sometime overnight from Dave Towell Cadillac was recovered Thursday morning about 3 miles from the dealership just west of downtown. OnStar — a subscription-based communications system in newer Cadillacs that can do everything from remote diagnosis of car trouble to turn-by-turn navigation — located the vehicle and shut down the engine.

According to police, the crime started with a break-in. Someone pried open the service door to the auto body shop of the dealership just north of downtown sometime after closing Wednesday.

Once inside, the thief found the keys to a dark granite Cadillac XT5 and drove away with no plates on the car.

About 9 a.m. Thursday, OnStar located the vehicle in the 600 block of Winans Avenue off of Lovers Lane.

OnStar disabled the Cadillac, and police continue to investigate who stole it.
