Jackson Township Police have reported 134 traffic accidents for the month of July.  While most of these accidents have been minor, there have been fatalities reported.  Since May, Jackson Township has seen 327 traffic accidents.  According to, there are more accidents in the summer due to vacations, parties, and younger drivers being on the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 43,000 people are killed each year in traffic accidents with 40 percent of those being alcohol related; also 95% of accidents can be avoided with the drivers being the most significant cause of the accident.

Speeding, aggressiveness, and impatience paired with other factors are usually the cause of traffic accidents.  There have been many road maintenance projects in Jackson this summer as well as summer thunderstorms all contributing to the hazardous conditions, which can distract drivers and cause car wrecks.

"There are no quotas or additional money given to police officers issuing citations in Jackson Township,” Jackson Township Police Chief David Zink said. “Our main concern is the safety of our citizens."
He advises drivers to use common sense when driving.
The top six causes for traffic accidents are distracted drivers, driver fatigue, drunk driving, speeding, aggressive driving (road rage) and inclement weather as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The administration reports that the best way to avoid accidents is to be aware of the road in front of you, stay alert and never drink and drive.
