A Kenmore High School student was arrested before classes early Wednesday morning after police and school officials found he was carrying a loaded pistol in his jacket, police said.

The boy, 17, is charged with bringing a concealed weapon onto school property. He was being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police say school officials were acting on tips and rumors from other students, who alleged the teen was known to sell marijuana and carry a gun on school grounds. A police officer assigned to the school spotted the teen and took him to the principalís office for questioning.

When the teen was asked to empty his pockets, police found cash and a loaded .25-caliber pistol with a bullet in its chamber. The teen was arrested immediately.

Police said the teen was questioned prior to the arrival of other students.

Messages left for Akron school administrators were not immediately returned.
