Urban League gala

AKRON: The Akron Urban League’s Black Tie Gala will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Akron Urban League’s President’s Hall, 440 Vernon Odom Blvd.

The event will feature guest speaker Gwendolyn Jordan, professor of political science at Savannah State University, and keynote speaker Marc Morial, president and chief executive officer of the National Urban League.

Tickets are $75 per person.

Art show at barn

BARBERTON: The first Art at the Farm show is planned for 5 to 8 p.m. June 9 at the historic O.C. Barber Pig Barn, 248 E. Robinson Ave.

The event is free to the public and will showcase the art of Barberton middle and high school students, as well as alumni and residents of the community.

It is hosted by the Barberton Historical Society and the Barberton Community Foundation.

GREEN

Flags to be retired

GREEN: The annual ceremonial retirement of American flags will be held at 7 p.m. June 14 at the Robert D. Campbell Training Center, 2825 Greensburg Road.

The ceremony will feature guest speaker U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Township.

Attendees must arrive 30 minutes before the ceremony. Once the ceremony begins, no traffic will be permitted in the parking lot.

Anyone wishing to retire an American flag can bring it to any Summit County Sheriff’s Office facility through June 8.

Flags must be folded and placed in a paper or plastic bag with a note attached to the flag eyelet indicating the name of the person or organization retiring the flag.

Family advocate

MEDINA: The Parent Advisory Group and Education will hold a meeting for families of individuals with developmental disabilities from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 19 at the Human Services Building, Office for Older Adults, 246 Northland Drive.

Peggy Martin, family advocate with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, will explain her role with the agency and will update families on current issues and services that are available.

COVENTRY TWP.: The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is holding a free workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 for people to become certified Passport to Fishing instructors.

Big garage sale

RICHFIELD: The annual Community Garage Sale will be held Saturday.

Maps and itemized lists of what will be available at each garage sale will be available for purchase for $1 from 8 a.m. to noon the day of the event at the corner of West Streetsboro Road and Broadview Road.

Each home participating in the sale will have an official sign posted near the road.

The event is sponsored by the Richfield Civic Organization.

Tire collection set

STOW: The Summit-Akron Solid Waste Management Authority is holding a tire collection for Summit County residents from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center, 1201 Graham Road.

There is a limit of 10 tires per vehicle. Passenger, light truck, motorcycle and small trailer tires are acceptable. Tires can be on or off rims. The fee is $1 per tire.
