MACEDONIA: The city administration and City Council resolved an outstanding budget matter that had resulted in a mayoral veto.
At the end of March, a divided council approved a budget that offered $6,200 for police training and $1,000 for dispatcher training.
Mayor Don Kuchta vetoed the line item, saying that amount was a “draft” amount that never got a full discussion, and the police chief was requesting more money.
At Thursday’s council meeting, council voted 4-1 to give Chief Jon Golden $10,000 for officer training and $5,000 for dispatcher training. Golden said he has a lot of young employees who needed training, and that while there were some free training programs, the better programs cost $500 or so per person.
Council Vice President Sylvia Hanneken argued for keeping the amount that was vetoed.
“I don’t see the need for the extra [money],” she said during council’s pre-meeting workshop.
Council President David Engle said he would support the additional money, but warned the administration that he will be vigilant about future “creeping” costs in the budget.
