AKRON: A 25-year-old Akron man was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in prison for shooting a man in the chest after he attempted to break up a fight between the assailant and his girlfriend, authorities said.
Raymond D. Bushner, of Orlando Avenue, was convicted by a Summit County jury in April on charges of felonious assault, multiple firearms specifications, tampering with evidence, intimidation of a crime witness and domestic violence.
On Oct. 30, prosecutors said, Bushner and his girlfriend were involved in a fight at her Eastgay Drive apartment.
The victim, his son and another woman attempted to intervene after being called for help.
As the incident intensified, Bushner backed out of the apartment waving a gun, fired an errant shot at his girlfriend, then fled after shooting the victim, Shawn Dotson, in the chest. Dotson survived.
Akron police arrested Bushner a month later after responding to a 911 call reporting an assault of his girlfriend.
Prosecutors said the woman admitted in trial testimony that Bushner tried to get her to change her story about what happened on the night of the shooting.
