MASSILLON: City police are warning people about a new theft ring hitting area stores, specifically hardware stores.

Authorities say the thieves are waiting in parking lots for people to park their trucks and trailers with unsecured items in the back.

Once the victim enters the store, one suspect follows the individual into the store while another steals items from the victim’s vehicle, police said.

The suspect inside the store communicates with the suspect outside using a cell phone.

“The logic is that often there are large value items inside some of the unsuspecting trucks/trailers who stop at these locations because often they’re on their way to a job site with expensive tools, etc.,” police wrote on their Facebook page. “These thieves know that.”

Police advised people to be alert and secure valuables in a trunk.

“As you’re well aware, these thieves are everywhere these days,” police said. “Help yourself not be a victim.”
