Beacon Journal staff report
Dozens of hairy-legged men slipped into dainty high-heels Friday and took to the streets of downtown Akron, all to raise money for the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties.
The burly men were joined by their wives, friends and children during the one-mile tour of downtown for the seventh annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. Organizers hoped to raise $20,000 for operation of the agency’s hot line.
One walker, attorney Adam VanHo, was joined by his wife, Tina, and infant son, Michael, for a journey around downtown. VanHo said blisters, downtown hills and finding the right pair of size 12 pumps were his biggest challenge.
“It’s a great cause,” he said. “If every county in the state had a crisis center like ours, the entire state would be better served.”
An after-party event for walkers and their supporters was held at the Zar Nightclub and Martini Bar downtown.
The Rape Crisis Center offers free counseling and other services to female and male sexual assault victims. The 24-hour hot line is 330-434-7273 or 1-877-906-7273.
