A gunman got away without any loot Monday after a store clerk chased after him and hit him with a broomstick, Akron police said.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. Monday at Valley Mart in the 1700 block of Merriman Road.

An employee told police that a man came into the store with a scarf covering his face, threw a blue grocery bag at him, pulled out a gun and demanded money.

The clerk put money in a bag, and the gunman took it.

But as the gunman — who was wearing flip-flops — started to run, the clerk chased him outside with a broomstick.

The clerk ultimately caught up with the thief and hit the robber in the back of the head with the stick.

The gunman then dropped the bag of money and ran north on Weathervane Lane, escaping. The clerk called police.

Authorities said the robber was a white man with brown hair, 25 to 30 years old, 5-feet-10 to 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds.

He was wearing a black scarf over his face, a hoodie with black-and-white horizontal stripes and shorts, authorities said.
