Improper hirings revealed

The Justice Departmentís inspector general said Thursday that eight high-ranking employees in the departmentís management division improperly promoted the hiring of relatives for summer or full-time work or assisted others in doing so. Seven of the employees violated federal law restricting employment of relatives and the eighth violated a federal ethics standard, the inspector general concluded. A ninth, the highest-ranking person mentioned in the report, was criticized for failing to respond to indications that subordinates may have violated anti-nepotism laws.

Jewish campers taunted

Five people have been charged with terrorizing campers at a Jewish summer camp in northeastern Pennsylvania. Authorities in Wayne County said the group of three adults and two juveniles sped through the grounds of Camp Bonim in Clinton Township in a pickup truck three times this month shooting paintballs at campers, destroying property and yelling racial epithets at campers and staff members.

Air Force scandal widens

The number of instructors at a Texas Air Force base under investigation in a widening sex scandal has increased from 12 to 15 and the number of alleged victims has gone up by seven to 38, officials said Thursday. Officials declined to identify the three new instructors at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio under investigation or comment about the nature of the allegations against them because no charges have been filed.

New police radios fail

Oaklandís year-old $18 million police radio system failed repeatedly during President Barack Obamaís visit Monday and during protests surrounding it, the head of the cityís police union said Thursday. Many of the 100 officers assigned to presidential security that day were unable at times to communicate by radio with police dispatchers, and even with each other, during the presidentís fundraiser at a downtown theater, said Barry Donelan, president of the Oakland Police Officers Association.
